Japanese Movies
Japanese Movies for Every Enthusiast! myLot Discussions Princess Mononoke This was the first Miyazaki movie that I ever watched and thus after I fell in love. This movie is really amazing with all of the details and action throughout it. San, princess mononoke, is trying to save the forest and the animals. Her and Ashitaka seem to be able to find a way for the people and the animals to coexist together. What are your thoughts on this movie? Studio Ghibli I'm not sure if many of you are aware (as I wasn't untill recently) but the japanese Studio Ghibli do some fantastic animated films. Their most recent being Ponyo which I loved. Are any of you here Studio Ghibli fans? If so, which is your favourite film? Favourite Ghibli movie? Mine is Spirited away. I just love Ghibli movies. I also like Howl's moving castle, The grave of the fireflies and Princess Mononoke. The Wonderful Miyazaki Hayao The famous film maker and director is at it again. He's made hit after hit of good anime movies. Like, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's moving castle, Spirited Away, and so many more. His latest film is 'Ponyo' and it's a loose adaption off of the 'Little Mermaid.' The good thing is that it's finally getting it's American release for those who don't prefer subtitles. What graphic style of anime you prefer? I know I am asking a weird question. I will try to explain a little bit. The graphic style of anime are shown in how the characters and the background are presented. For example coarse outline. Details graphics. Static background crowd. Funky drawings like patches of color instead of continuous color. Irregular outline. I try to categorised them as below,Simple + coarse (eg.Crayon Shinchan)
Simple + cute (eg. Ranma 1/2, Pokemon)
Normal (Full Metal Alchemist, Inuyasha, Naruto etc.)
Modern (Computer graphics eg. Appleseed)
Artistic (Detailed with style. eg. The moving castle of Howl, Princess Mononoke)
Fansy (you can see hair as strps eg. La Corda D'Oro, Vampire Knight)
Funky (eg. Monoke)For myself, I cannot accept the funky style The Greatest Miyazaki Movie? In my opinion, Spirited Away trumps by far Nausikaa, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, even Totoro and Castle in the Sky. The engaging storyline, charming characters, and ever dazzling animation of Howl's Moving Castle makes it a close second. The fact, I'd say, of Howl's Moving Castle being based off of a book and it not being wholly original, tips it into second place. Spirited Away is such a beautiful movie, an enchanting fairytale. The music and the voices, the intricate animation to make the world come alive truly left me awestruck in a way that his other movies came close to, but did not surpass. Does ultimate anime exists? There's tons of anime. My question is? Which do you think is the best? I myself really like those ones:
-Cowboy Bebop
-Slayers
-Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
-Ghost in the shell
-Iria
-Princess Mononoke
-Spirited AwayPlease write those which you think can be called the ultimate anime and why do you think so? Grave of the Fireflies Been busy with work lately and there's nothing good to say. Last week while getting some rest over the weekend, i had catch a film on dvd. It's an animation film from Japan titled "Grave of the Fireflies".Normally do not post discussion on films myself as there are not many good ones which deserved a mention. But this film (IMHO) ranks among such great films as Casablanca, Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner, the LOTR trilogy, E.T., Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, The Deer Hunter, and chinese cinema greats like Chungking Express, A Better Tomorrow, Infernal Affairs (remade by Martin Scorsese as 'The Departed'), and Cest La Vie, Mon Cheri. It's not the form that's important but the story and the feelings it evoked. At its core, it also has a serious theme about war and its consequence on children. Although the tone is serious but the film itself is beautiful in its simplicity. The scenes in the film has to be seen to be appreciated. Many a film has depicted the suffering of human during war but few have shown its horror through the eyes of children. One critic said "It is the most profoundly human animated film I've ever seen." The mark of a great film is not that it...
